Case Study

Polyethylene pipes produced by NUPI Industrie Italiane S.p.A. were chosen to replace the cast iron pipes on the Lungarno Torrigiani, one of the embankments along the Arno river in Florence, one of the most beautiful Italian cities renowned all over the world for its history and art. On May 25th, the collapse of a cast iron pipe caused a landslide that created a 200-meter long and 7-meter wide chasm in the heart of Florence, between Ponte Vecchio and Ponte alle Grazie. Over 20 cars swallowed under water, two buildings were evacuated, tens of thousands of citizens remained with dry taps for hours and the road literally sunk to 5.4 meters below the river level. Moreover, damages for 5 million Euro, no injuries but a big shock for everyone. The cause of all this was the collapse of a cast iron water pipe 70 cm long. The hydraulic works necessary to ensure normal water supply to the city were completed at the beginning of June, while the works of replacement and restoration of the area affected by the landslide and the total securing of Lungarno Torrigiani were completed at the end of 2016. Cast iron pipes are subject to cracking and corrosion, while Polyethylene pipes produced by NUPI Industrie Italiane S.p.A. offer many advantages such as hydraulic sealing, resistance to corrosion, abrasion, impact, chemicals and microorganisms, non-toxicity and reliability in time exceeding 50 years.
